Hester sent her art to her Global Art Project partner in Karachi, Pakistan. Hester’s 6th grade students also participated in the exchange.

"Originally I had planned to use an old globe as the basis for a 3D piece and was going to weave ribbons around it, but when I was matched with Pakistan I decided on a 2D piece to make sure the receiver would not have custom problems and it would be easier to send. I still wanted to use a map of some kind and I picked up a reproduction of an antique map of Eastern and Western hemispheres. I cut them apart (one along latitude and one longitude-I also wrote in longhand in gold pen the word "unity" along these lines) and wove them together. I then made a paper frame to hang the new united hemisphere." Hester van Heemstra
